Background

In the early 19th century the plants species was first discoverd in Sumatera as Melastoma rotundifolia by William Jack, a Scottish botanist and medical practitioner that closely related to the famous S. Raffles. They extensively documenting the rich flora of Indonesia starting from 1818 up until his death in 1825. The species documentation and then recollected and perfected after his passing by C. L. Blume in 1831 as what we known today as Phyllagathis rotundifolia.

This species forming extensive carpets trailing dark under the shady canopy trees around rainforest jungle of Sumatera up until Thailand and Bhurma usually around 20 to 1400 m asl. The iridiscent blue leaf blade are very appealing by the forest floor commonly found on the ridges and wet damp of humus. Vernacularly known by the name Banau, Banal Hutan, Tapak Gajah or Tapak Sulaiman, the leaves decoction are used traditionally to cure fever. The ovate leaves blade can grow up to 45 by 35 cm wide with petioles 2 to 8 mm tight dense between stems, structuraly hairy and red-brown petioles. This herbaceous can grow up to 70 cm long. Sometimes you can find white spots on the juvenile leaves. The flower usually growth in bright purple-pink with penducle grow short and can be found flowering and fruiting all year long. This very creeping jungle floor shrub can definitely added up to your exotic jungle collection.
