Background

Barringtonia are first published in 1776 using this genera name. With 72 species accepted Barringtonia considered as the largest genus in lecythidaceae family. In July 1910 C.A. Lauterbach published Barringtonia papuana as accepted name. Species has the most slender leaves amongst the genera, it can easly differentiate by it's small pachycaul grows (3 - 10 m tall) with leaves tuffted at the branch end. It is has cauliflorous rachi with white flowers. The slender leaves grows up to 126cm long by 8cm wide, with 70 to 95 pairs of veins each side.

Vernacularly known as Kun-job in Maian and used as fish poison due to it's tree bark saponins or Sehsegeh in Orokaiva language. Founded and observed in lowland coastal along the river water mostly in primary and secondary forest this exotics can be considered as river plants. Matured Barringtonia papuana resembles an open umbrella from a far make it perfect add to your garden.
