Background

True ant-garden species exhibit two behavioral traits (CORBARA & al. 1999). A retrieval behavior regard to the seeds of epiphytic plants and the ability to construct a humus-rich arboreal carton nest, in this chase of the unique Hoya mitrata.
Described by Kerr (1940) in the Hooker's Icones Plantarum in 1940 publication from a single specimen. Later on, Hoya mitrata Arthur Francis G. Ker more observed by multiple specimen by Weissflog (1999). A dipterocarp forest inhabitants found across Borneo, Malaya, Philippines, Sumatera, Thailand and Java. Like many other species in the genera, Hoya mitrata has fleshy thick leaves that grow in pairs, what is different is its habit. Known to science the leaves grow dimorphic domatia (a multi-layered dome-like shape in response to ants-inhabitant) into two types. Type I known to be the domatium or cabage like forming, is the elongated-wide rounded with semi-cordate leaf base with lighter green color and redish under side. The internode in type I is very short, actually results in a tight cluster around the stem. Type II, the elongated-lanceolate with darker green color is seemingly stiffer and glossier than the type I.
Most of the samples taken for the study was occupied by the most populated Asian ants, Crematogaster sp. with four others Pheidole, Polyrhachis, Camponotus, and Technomyrmex. This sampling observed in habitat was the reason this Hoya species is stated myrmecotrophic epiphyte that has a mutual relationship with ants. Pheidole sp. and Technomyrmex was found nesting on its domatium leaves, observed filling up gaps between leaves with carton nest structuring chewed-up plant fibers, soil, insect fragments, and other small particles. Some samples were found to have more than one species colonizing. It is suggested by the observation that ant are helping the photosynthesis of H. mitrata by collecting debris and microscopic matters on its leaves. By the ants nutrient rich carton nest, some roots developed better under H. mitrata domatium leaves. In its mutualism habit between ants and plants, it is surely added H. mitrata in the specific type True Ant-Garden.
Hoya mitrata is known to have a close relationship with the Philippines endemic, Hoya darwinii, and the Bornea Hoya undulata for its observed dimorphic domatium leaves. In 2013, Dr Michelle Rodda proposal on the newer name should be retained because it had become so well known. For that reason, H. wallichiana and H. mitrata are the same species.

Water

Water well on dry/summer every 5 days, please wait until top 3inches soil are dry. Once the watering habit are established for maximum grows, this plant can thrive for very long time. Wait for longer gap between watering in winter as most of the wild specimen has it's habit on defending its life by dormancy. Make sure your plant medium get fairly dry.
