Background

Monstera deliciosa, a plant native to Central America, is sometimes called swiss cheese plant or split-leaf philodendron. It is an evergreen perennial climbing vine that stands out for its large pierced leaves on strong plant stalks and its long aerial roots that resemble cords. In its original tropical environment, it will impressively grow up to 70' into large trees, covering the trunks with leaves that are between one and three feet long. The typical height of indoor plants is between 6 and 8 feet. The plant's large, glossy, deep-green adult leaves are conspicuously cut and perforated. Typically, young leaves are uncut and very small.

Although the genus' name is not totally established, it is thought to have come from the name Linnaeus gave to this group of plants, Dracontium. As a revision of Linnaeus, the term Monstera first appears in a 1763 publication; however, no explanation is given as to why that name was chosen. The sweet banana and pineapple are represented by the particular identifier for the delectable edible fruit.
